CSCS Skills Certification Scheme - Rudimentary Principles

All candidates must sit and successfully pass an independent assessment of memorised safety information. The test shall be built to examine the understanding of the applicant around a wide range of health and safety subject areas.
Currently the only real Health and Safety assessment that suits this strategy will be the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Health and Safety examination.
The CSCS H and S testing can be acquired at 4 separate levels these are supervisory, management, operative and professionally qualified person.
For those involved in work such as Highways, Working at heights and Lifts and escalators there are also specialist assessments.
The relevant cscs card should be applied for within 24 months of passing the appropriate cscs test.
The Construction Skills Certification construction skills scheme has a mutual agreement with FAS Safepass, that can give exemption for the assessment requirements.
The Panel Members of CSCS Limited include representatives of the owners, and therefore are from the following Construction Industry Council, Construction Confederation, GMB Trade Union, Transport and General Workers Union, Federation of Master Builders, Construction Clients Group, National Specialist Contractor Council and Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians

The aim of the scheme is to supply the following positive aspects to individuals:

improved employment prospects , recognition of training requirements to enhance knowledge, skills recognition, competence and qualifications and increased health and safety awareness

The intents of the construction skills scheme include;

To remain self-financing with any surplus finances being used for the benefit of the Scheme., To increase expectations associated with health and safety to lower risks and accidents all through the construction industry., To supply credentials for UK workers that might be recognized within Europe through agreements with other European national schemes to mutually recognise qualifications., To track workers throughout the construction sector that have already realized a recognized level of proficiency and to create a method of recognition., To motivate construction and even their customers to utilize skilled workers. and To be available on a purely voluntary basis for building trade workers whose careers are not covered by a certified scheme.

The system doesn't seek to duplicate other certification schemes with regard to distinct jobs. Rather, these kinds of schemes may possibly merge with the cscs scheme which should only arise when both schemes concur.
A wide range of occupations in civil engineering, building, construction are included in the cscs scheme
The CSCS cards certify competence especially health and safety for people requiring access to the site, where individual safety or the safety of others may be at risk.

All qualifying members are issued with a proficiency card and a range of these are obtainable:
Yellow Card Site Visitor, Blue Card Experienced Worker, Blue Card Craft Level, Platinum Card Management Level, Red Card For Trainees, Yellow Card Professionally Qualified Person, Black Card Senior Management Level, Gold Card Advanced Craft/Supervisory Level, Green CardBasic Construction Site Operative

The Scheme started in April 1995 and has since then extended to include a variety of careers. New occupations could be added when another SVQ or NVQ is introduced subject to requirements.
